APDA/AFPPD AFPPD Annual Conference: Addressing Three Pillars and Beyond ICPD30
7-9 October 2024, Bali, IndonesiaOn 7-9 October, the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) and Asian Population and Development Association (APDA) organized the AFPPD Annual Conference: Addressing Three Pillars and Beyond ICPD30 in Bali, Indonesia. This event was co-hosted by the Indonesia Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (IFPPD) and National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) of Indonesia, supported by the Japan Trust Fund (JTF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and Family Planning 2030 (FP2030), and was attended by over 60 participants including parliamentarians, government officials, representatives from international organizations, NGOs and experts from 19 Asia and Pacific countries.
At the opening, Hon. Prof. Takemi Keizo, MP Japan and Chair of AFPPD, welcomed the participants and stressed the need to actively invest in women, girls and youth, ensure access to health and education, and promote entrepreneurship among women and young people in light of the recent demographic trends in the Asia-Pacific region. He concluded his address by emphasizing that AFPPD‘s role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the ICPD30 Commitment is more important than ever. On behalf of IPPF, Ms. Fukuda Tomoko, ESEAOR Regional Director, made remarks regarding its efforts to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), protect women and youth from violence and discrimination, and respect the dignity of older persons, noting partnerships as key to success. She mentioned that SRHR is not only an issue for young people and IPPF's approach to SRHR including SOGIESC community and older persons has broad and deep implications. Ms. Sumita Banerjee, Managing Director of FP2030 Asia and the Pacific Hub, stated in her address that demographic changes and climate change are significantly affecting women and vulnerable populations and urged each parliamentarian to embrace their important role as champions for population and development issues and advocate for policies that prioritize access to right-based family planning.
The subsequent sessions covered: ICPD30 and Demographic Changes in Asia and Pacific (Session 1), Investing in Youth and Demographic Dividend in Asia-Pacific for Implementation of ICPD PoA (Session 2), Promotion of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment for Sustainable Development (Session 3), Addressing Population Ageing and Wellbeing of Older Persons in Asia and Pacific (Session 4), Climate Change in Development of Societies and Sustainable Development (Session 5), and Parliamentarians’ Role to Address ICPD PoA and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Session 6). In addition to the three AFPPD pillars (Active Ageing, Investment in Youth, and Empowerment of Women), the importance of UHC and challenges to environmental sustainability were addressed. The conference concluded with the adoption of the Bali Parliamentarians' Statement highlighting specific and concrete roles that parliamentarians should play in achieving the ICPD PoA and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
On 9 October, the participants visited organizations related to the three AFPPD pillars. At the Indonesian Family Planning Association (IPPA), an IPPF Member Association, they observed activities to promote SRHR through youth engagement; at the Gerasa Women's Crisis Center, they learned about its comprehensive support for victims of GBV and other forms of violence. In Pedungan, they learned about the local government-led Integrated ageing service initiatives.
