On 16 February, Japan Parliamentarians Federation for Population (JPFP) held a study meeting with Dr. Makoto Iokibe, President of Hyogo Earthquake Memorial 21st Century Research Institute, as a lecturer, which was moderated by Hon. Hitoshi Kikawada, Secretary General of JPFP.
In her opening remarks, Hon. Yoko Kamikawa, Chair of JPFP, referred to the Turkey-Syria earthquake that occurred on 6 February and expressed her intention to assess the needs of the affected areas in order to provide necessary assistance.
Dr. Iokibe gave a lecture titled “Japan's Role in the International Community after Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine”. He explained that Japanese attitudes toward security has been changing, and more and more people think that Japan should have the ability to fight back, rather than its self-defense-only principle. He then stated that in order not to let the other countries start a war against Japan, it is important for Japan to continue dialogue with them, while preparing for what may come.
